Understanding the basics of raw feeding

Understanding the Basics of Raw Feeding

Raw feeding, also known as a raw diet or biologically appropriate raw food (BARF), is a growing trend among pet owners seeking to provide their furry companions with a natural and healthy eating regimen. This approach to feeding focuses on replicating the diet of wild carnivores, allowing pets to consume unprocessed, raw food that closely resembles what their ancestors would have eaten in the wild.

The concept behind raw feeding is rooted in the belief that cats and dogs thrive when fed a diet that emulates their evolutionary needs. Proponents of this approach argue that processed pet foods often contain fillers, additives, and low-quality ingredients that may not meet their nutritional requirements. By contrast, raw feeding enthusiasts claim that this method provides numerous benefits, including improved digestion, increased energy levels, healthier skin and coat, and stronger immune systems.

One of the main principles of raw feeding is a focus on high-quality, whole foods. Advocates argue that cats and dogs are biologically designed to consume animal flesh, bones, and organs, and therefore, raw feeders prioritize these components in their pet’s diet. This means that raw food recipes typically involve a combination of raw meat (including muscle meat, organs, and sometimes whole prey), named bones (such as chicken or turkey necks), and fruits and vegetables.

When transitioning our pets to a raw diet, it is crucial to ensure a balanced and nutritionally complete diet. This involves providing a variety of protein sources (such as beef, chicken, lamb, or fish) to ensure that our pets receive the necessary amino acids for optimal health. Additionally, including a small portion of vegetables in their diet is believed to provide essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber that might be lacking in a solely meat-based diet.

One important consideration when feeding raw is that it should be done with strict attention to food safety. Advocates of this feeding approach stress the significance of handling raw meat properly to minimize any risk of foodborne illnesses. It is advised to freeze raw meat before thawing it to eliminate any potential parasites and to thoroughly clean and disinfect all surfaces and utensils that come into contact with raw food. It is also important to remember that raw feeding may not be appropriate for all pets, particularly those with compromised immune systems or certain medical conditions. Consulting with a veterinarian is recommended to ensure that this dietary choice aligns with an individual pet’s specific needs.

Aside from the nutritional benefits, raw feeding advocates often mention the positive impact it has on dental health. Chewing raw bones is believed to help keep teeth clean and gums strong, removing plaque and tartar buildup naturally. Moreover, gnawing on bones provides mental stimulation and can help alleviate boredom, which is particularly beneficial for active and intelligent pets.

While raw feeding can offer numerous benefits, it is important to mention that it is not without controversy. Critics argue that feeding a raw diet might increase the risk of bacterial contamination and nutritional imbalances if not executed meticulously. Additionally, it requires time and effort to properly source, prepare, and balance the raw ingredients. Therefore, it is essential to carefully research and educate oneself before starting this feeding approach to ensure that one can provide a safe and nutritionally adequate diet for their pet.

In conclusion, raw feeding is an approach to pet nutrition that aims to replicate a diet that mirrors what animals would consume in their natural habitat. By focusing on high-quality, whole foods and minimizing processed ingredients, pet owners seek to optimize their pet’s health and well-being.

The importance of sourcing high-quality ingredients

The importance of sourcing high-quality ingredients

When it comes to raw feeding, the quality of the ingredients you use becomes paramount. The whole premise of this feeding approach rests on providing your pet with wholesome and nutritious meals that mimic their natural diet in the wild. By sourcing high-quality ingredients, you ensure that your furry friend receives the utmost nutritional benefit from their meals.

One of the primary reasons why sourcing high-quality ingredients is crucial is the nutritional value they provide. Animals in the wild obtain their nutrients from consuming fresh prey, which is rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. To replicate this natural diet, it is important to select ingredients that offer similar nutritional content. By opting for high-quality ingredients that are fresh and unprocessed, you can rest assured that your pet is getting the necessary nutrients for optimal health.

Additionally, high-quality ingredients also help promote healthy digestion. The digestive systems of our furry companions are designed to digest raw food efficiently. Raw ingredients such as lean meats, bones, and organs provide natural enzymes that aid in digestion. These enzymes are often lost during the cooking process of commercially available pet food. Through raw feeding, you can help maintain a healthy digestive system for your pet, thus reducing the risk of digestive issues such as diarrhea or constipation.

Another important aspect of sourcing high-quality ingredients is food safety. Ensuring that the ingredients you use are of the highest quality significantly reduces the risk of foodborne illnesses. Raw food, just like any other type of food, can potentially carry harmful bacteria or parasites. By selecting high-quality ingredients from trusted sources, you can be confident that the risk of contamination is minimized. This is particularly crucial when feeding raw meat, as it is important to ensure it comes from reliable sources that adhere to proper handling and sanitation practices.

Furthermore, sourcing high-quality ingredients contributes to the overall well-being and health of your pet. Just like humans, animals too thrive when offered a well-balanced and nutritious diet. When your pet consumes high-quality ingredients, their immune system is strengthened, leading to improved overall health and vitality. Adequate nutrition plays a fundamental role in supporting various bodily functions, including cellular regeneration, organ function, and maintaining a healthy weight. By providing your pet with the best-quality ingredients, you are investing in their long-term health and well-being.

In conclusion, when practicing raw feeding, it is of utmost importance to source high-quality ingredients. Opting for ingredients that offer natural and holistic nutritional benefits ensures that your pet receives the necessary nutrients for optimal health—additionally, high-quality ingredients aid in promoting a healthy digestive system and reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses. By prioritizing the quality of the ingredients you use, you contribute to your pet’s overall well-being and longevity. Therefore, invest in sourcing high-quality ingredients for your furry friend’s raw meals and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with providing them with the best possible nutrition.

Proper storage and handling of raw food

Proper storage and handling of raw food

Raw feeding has gained popularity among pet owners seeking to provide their animals with a more natural and nutritious diet. While this approach to feeding has its benefits, it is crucial to prioritize the proper storage and handling of raw food to ensure the health and safety of both pets and humans. Taking necessary precautions is essential to preventing the risk of foodborne illnesses and maintaining the quality of raw food. Here are three essential tips to consider when it comes to the storage and handling of raw food for your pets.

1. Temperature control and storage guidelines:
Raw food, particularly meat, should be stored and handled at appropriate temperatures to minimize the risk of bacterial growth and contamination. Ideally, raw food should be kept at or below 40°F (4°C) to slow down bacterial growth. When storing raw food, it is crucial to place it in containers or bags specifically designed for raw food storage to prevent cross-contamination and maintain freshness. These containers should be leak-proof, durable, and easy to clean to ensure proper sanitation.

To maximize safety, practice the “first in, first out” rule, where older batches are used or discarded before introducing new ones. It is also advisable to label each container or bag with the date of purchase or production to help you keep track of how long the food has been stored. This way, you can ensure that you are using fresh food and minimize the chances of feeding your pets spoiled or potentially harmful food.

2. Separation and prevention of cross-contamination:
Raw food, especially poultry products, carries a higher risk of bacterial contamination, like Salmonella or E. coli. To prevent the spread of harmful bacteria, it is crucial to handle raw food separately from other food items in the kitchen. Use designated cutting boards, utensils, and countertops when preparing and serving raw food to reduce the likelihood of cross-contamination.

Additionally, ensure proper hand hygiene practices by washing hands thoroughly with soap and warm water before and after handling raw food. This helps minimize the risk of spreading bacteria to surfaces or other food items that could cause illness. Consider using gloves when handling raw food, especially if you have any cuts or sores on your hands.

3. Thawing techniques:
When feeding raw food, it is common to freeze it beforehand to preserve its freshness and extend its shelf life. However, it is crucial to thaw raw food safely to minimize bacterial growth and maintain its nutritional content. The safest method for thawing raw food is in the refrigerator, allowing it to gradually reach a safe temperature. This method ensures that the food stays cold enough to inhibit bacterial growth while thawing.

Avoid thawing raw food at room temperature or using a microwave, as these methods can create an ideal environment for bacterial growth. If you need to thaw raw food quickly, the safest alternative is to place it in a sealed bag and submerge it in cold water. Change the water every 30 minutes to maintain a safe temperature. Once thawed, always serve the raw food promptly to avoid leaving it at room temperature for extended periods.

By following these proper storage and handling techniques, pet owners can provide the benefits of raw feeding while minimizing the risks associated with bacterial contamination. Maintaining an environment that prioritizes the safety and health of both pets and humans is crucial to ensuring the enjoyment of a natural and nutritious diet for our beloved companions.

Incorporating variety and balance in the raw feeding diet

Incorporating Variety and Balance in the Raw Feeding Diet

When it comes to raw feeding, one of the key principles to keep in mind is variety and balance in the diet. Just as humans require a diverse range of nutrients from different food groups, our furry friends also benefit from a well-rounded and varied diet. By incorporating a wide selection of meats, bones, organs, and supplements, pet owners can ensure that their raw feeding diet offers optimal nutrition for their beloved companions.

First and foremost, it is important to understand the importance of variety in a raw-feeding diet. By offering a diverse array of proteins, pet owners can provide a wide range of essential nutrients that promote overall health and well-being. A balanced raw-feeding diet typically includes a mix of muscle meats, organ meats, and recreational bones. Muscle meats such as beef, chicken, and turkey are rich in protein, while organ meats like liver and kidney provide essential vitamins and minerals. Additionally, recreational bones, such as raw knucklebones, can fulfill a dog’s instinct to chew while promoting dental health.

Incorporating variety not only ensures that pets receive a broad spectrum of nutrients but also prevents the development of food sensitivities. Feeding the same protein source over an extended period can increase the risk of an adverse reaction or intolerance. By offering a rotation of different proteins, pet owners can minimize the likelihood of developing sensitivities and allergies in their pets.

To achieve balance in a raw feeding diet, it is crucial to provide the right proportion of meat, bones, and organs. The general guideline is to feed approximately 80% muscle meat, 10% secreting organs (such as the liver and kidney), and 10% raw meaty bones. This balance ensures an adequate intake of protein, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids.

Muscle meats should form the majority of a raw feeding diet, as they are the primary source of protein. They provide the building blocks for key bodily functions, including muscle development, immune system support, and hormone production. Organ meats, on the other hand, are nature’s multivitamins. They are packed with vital nutrients such as vitamins A, B, D, E, and K and essential minerals like iron, copper, and zinc. The inclusion of appropriate amounts of both muscle and organ meats guarantees a well-rounded and nutritionally complete diet for pets.

While raw, meaty bones provide an excellent source of calcium and other minerals, they also serve as a natural teeth-cleaning tool. The mechanical action of chewing on bones helps remove tartar and plaque, thus promoting dental health. However, it is essential to choose the right size and type of raw bones suitable for your pet’s breed, size, and chewing ability to avoid any potential hazards.

In addition to a varied mix of proteins, bones, and organs, supplementing the raw feeding diet can further enhance its nutritional value. Certain supplements, like fish oil, kelp, and probiotics, can help ensure that pets receive a well-balanced intake of essential fatty acids, trace minerals, and gut-friendly bacteria. However, it is important to consult with a veterinarian to determine which supplements are most suitable for your pet’s specific needs.

In conclusion, incorporating variety and balance into a raw feeding diet is of utmost importance to provide optimal nutrition for pets. By offering a diverse selection of proteins, including muscle meats, organs, and raw meaty bones, pet owners can ensure that their furry friends receive a broad spectrum of essential nutrients. Additionally, supplement

Transitioning to a raw feeding diet gradually and safely

Transitioning to a raw feeding diet gradually and safely

Transitioning your pet to a raw feeding diet can have numerous health benefits, but it’s essential to approach this change gradually and safely. A sudden shift from a commercial diet to raw food can potentially upset your pet’s digestive system and lead to discomfort or other complications. Therefore, it’s crucial to follow a carefully planned transition process that allows their body to adjust and adapt to this new way of eating. Here are three essential tips to ensure a smooth and safe transition to a raw feeding diet for your furry friend.

1. Educate yourself and consult with professionals
Before embarking on a raw feeding journey, take the time to educate yourself about the diet and its requirements. Understanding the essential nutrients and balance needed for your pet’s overall well-being is vital. Learn about different raw food options, including meat, bones, and organ meats, and ensure you’re aware of any potential safety concerns. You can find a wealth of information in books, online forums, and resources dedicated to raw feeding.

Additionally, consider consulting with a veterinarian or a professional experienced in raw feeding. They can provide valuable guidance tailored to your pet’s specific needs, including any potential concerns related to allergies, underlying health conditions, or age-related considerations. Working alongside these professionals will ensure that you establish a well-rounded and nutritious raw feeding plan that supports your pet’s optimal health.

2. Gradual transition to raw food
Transitioning your pet to a raw feeding diet should be a gradual process to allow their digestive system to acclimate to the change. An abrupt switch can lead to an upset stomach, diarrhea, or other digestive issues. Begin by introducing small portions of raw food as a supplement to their regular diet. Over time, gradually increase the proportion of raw food while decreasing the amount of commercial food. This gradual approach will allow their body to adjust and minimize the chances of digestive disturbances.

One recommended method is introducing raw meat treats or small pieces of raw meat alongside their regular meals. As they become accustomed to the new taste and texture, slowly replace one meal each day with a raw food option. Monitor your pet closely during the transition period, ensuring they maintain a healthy weight, and look out for any adverse digestive reactions. The length of the transition process can vary depending on your pet’s age, breed, and individual tolerance levels.

3. Monitor and adjust as needed
Throughout the transition process, it’s crucial to closely monitor your pet’s behavior, physical appearance, and overall well-being. Observe their energy levels, coat condition, appetite, and stool consistency. These indicators will help you evaluate whether the raw feeding diet is suitable for and properly nourishes your pet.

If you notice any adverse reactions, such as persistent digestive issues or weight loss, it’s important to make adjustments accordingly. Consider consulting with professionals and adjusting the raw food proportions or ingredients to better suit your pet’s individual needs. Remember that every animal is unique, and finding the right balance might require some trial and error.

You can ensure a safe and successful switch by gradually transitioning your pet to a raw feeding diet and closely monitoring their response. With time and patience, your beloved companion can reap the numerous benefits of a raw food diet, enjoying improved overall health, vitality, and longevity.

In conclusion, raw feeding can be a beneficial and fulfilling way to nourish our pets. However, it is crucial to prioritize safety, hygiene, and balance when preparing raw meals. By following the three essential preparation tips discussed in this article, pet owners can significantly minimize the risks associated with raw feeding and ensure the optimal health and well-being of their furry companions. Recognizing the importance of sourcing high-quality ingredients, implementing proper food handling practices, and incorporating a balanced diet are key factors in successfully transitioning to and maintaining a raw feeding regimen. By staying informed, seeking professional guidance when necessary, and consistently educating ourselves about the nutritional needs of our pets, we can embark on this rewarding and natural feeding approach with confidence, knowing that we are providing them with the best possible care.

  1. Thanks for the video! My dog got diarhea even when I gave- just the one end part of the chicken wing- added to her current regualr diet. My vet tested the poo and said she had a high bacteria count in the stool, for which she gave anti biotics (I did not give them to her. So, I have started mixing cooked meats to the kibble, or egg. The kibble is so expensive I am almost sure home made would be cheaper- and of course more nutritious. My dog weighs under 20 pounds, but I am concerned about pancreatitis as my dog breed is suseptible.

  2. Any food change causes upset stomach to dogs…. even different kibble

  3. I feel like I won't be committed to a raw diet feeding BUT I will be committed to a whole prey feeding since it's easier to do than raw feeding

I can’t get over my apprehension to give my dog raw chicken legs…..seems like so much could go wrong from pieces of bone lacerating his his intestines to salmonella…..

  5. Are u still single? I like you

  6. I just ordered BJ’s Raw Pet Food. It’s pretty affordable and they’ve taken all the guess work out of it. I’m new to Raw and they seemed like the best fit for me. Wish me luck with the transition phase as one of my pugs has a very very sensitive stomach

  7. I love this video it keeps it real. personally, I can't make the commitment and going for commercial raw but I Admire these amazing people that can do this ❤

  8. The first step in building a raw diet is to get a CBC done on your animal and ALWAYS add fruits, Veggies, and starches

  9. thank you so much i will try my best to help my cat 😊👍🏻

  10. Go to your local emart or international mart. They have everything lol

  11. Is there any guide you have for all the raw food you can feed your cat and what category they fall under? I’m trying to be safe when buying all my raw food, and I wish there was just some guide that showed all the meats you can buy and what category they fall under (muscle meat, secreting organ, etc)

  12. My 6 month old XL bully has been on cooked food but now I’m switching to raw, she’s has really bad stomachs but I know it takes time.

I’m just introducing it bit by bit

  13. Sadly I don’t find fresh raw food even for human in my area, Do you think it’s okay if i did the recipe but with cooking? (Mostly steaming) I’ll never include bones so no worries!
I decided to add bone meal instead

  14. one of the things you should do before raw feeding is cook the meat🤣
you get about 120% more from cooked meat,
the only reason human advanced so fast from the cavemen stages because we started cooking, gave our brains the nutrition to grow😎

  15. why do you use prey over barf?

  16. Hi please can you help. Based on 80/10/10 i have 3kg of meat should I be adding be 300 grams of bone meal & 300 grams organs for 3000 kg meat? Sorry I'm only asking as I think I screwed up my recipe

  17. Hi! What is your insight on re-freezing? When i prep my dog’s raw meals, i cut organs into 1 inch strips or cubes and freeze them. I thaw it partially once a week, just enough so i can break off that week’s portion and refreese right away.

Homemade raw diet become a little ridiculous where I live in because we have food shortages right now. Even to get eggs and raw chicken just too hard to find or even a little too expensive and need to get them more state next door. A lot of raw diet feeders in my country already slowly stop giving raw food and starting to get much more reliable like kibbles or can food. So if you still can get good supply then good for you.

  19. What do you think of BIXBI’s freeze dried dog food and also Rawbistro’s dehydrated dog food?

  20. Hello just found your channel and love the videos. If possible can you show me (Us) on how to make a balance meal for cats using Raw Miami. I would like to know how to balance 80/10/10 for my Sphynx just with using them and whatever supplements are needed. Thank you

  21. Hi I have an important question, I think your videos have been great and really hope you see this. So far with all I've seen you post, this diet would almost be considered a Keto diet except it has low fat content and high protein. Are dogs in ketosis on the diet you've recommended, should there be more healthy fats introduced? Since the body gains its energy from carbs or ketosis how are the dogs getting evergy without fat or carbs? Thanks in advance!

  22. I love watching your videos. I would like to start feeding my dog raw food, but I have a big problem, he refuses to eat raw meat. I'm disappointed and I know it's all because of the kibbles. Veterinarians convinced us that kibbles are the best food, but I know they are not. I'm very disappointed, but at least he eats it when it's cooked.😥Do somebody knows how to solve this problem? 😭😩

  23. I’m really new to raw feeding. Wouldn’t giving your pet raw meat from hunted game give them worms?

  24. Hi I just had a question. I've been feeding my kitten pmr since I got her at 8 weeks and she's been doing great. I used to feed her 5 times a day since she would eat very little at one time so I had to give more smaller meals. She just turned 4 months old and I've made it 4 times a day about every 5 hours (7.30am-10.30pm). I feed her 8% of her body weight but today she was meowing for food even though there were two hours till her next mealtime. I gave in and fed her and she finished almost all of it meaning she was actually hungry. Now I'm not sure what to do if this happens again. I've heard kittens should be allowed to eat whenever they want since they're growing so should I keep her mealtimes or feed her if shes hungry earlier?

  25. I'm so pleased and relieved to have found your channel – thank you for the level of detail you put into your videos.
A 5 year old dog I recently adopted went into heat within one week and "unfortunately" became impregnated by one of my other two male dogs (also both adopted strays) as I didn't get them separated soon enough. Eight puppies were born last night and all seem to be doing just fine, though I haven't intruded into their quiet spot too much yet other than to supply mom with plenty of food and water, clean up duties, etc.
It's quite a nerve-wracking experience for me, it being my first experience of a litter. I am very motivated to give them all the best start in life that I can but I know that I physically and financially won't be able to keep all 8 of them. Two maybe and that would take my total up to five dogs and I already have 8 cats. Sorry to ramble but I just wanted to say about my concern with them most probably not being continued on an all meat diet if and when they are re-homed and the kind of stress that they will most likely go on to experience suddenly transitioning from an all-meat diet to one of more convenience – kibble/canned food/etc.
Has anyone had experience of such transitions and their effects or am I worrying over nothing? I live in Italy now but am from the UK and, whilst I don't want to anger any Italians out there, the way that dogs in the countryside are looked upon and looked after out here falls a bit short of what I my experience of dog-owners' attitudes were in the UK. Therefore, I think that me finding "suitable" new owners will be difficult and this may mean that I'll have them for longer than the 2 months I had planned, meaning that they will be very accustomed to their raw meat!

  26. I do trust all the ideas youve presented in your post They are really convincing and will definitely work Nonetheless the posts are too short for newbies May just you please lengthen them a bit from next time Thank you for the post

  27. Thank you I have just been searching for information approximately this topic for a while and yours is the best I have found out so far However what in regards to the bottom line Are you certain concerning the supply
