NEW WATERFORD — McKenzie Paskevitch is a girl of few words. When asked by New Waterford Mayor Shane Patrone if she wanted to say anything at the New Waterford Dog Park grand opening, the 11-year-old said simply “Just thanks.”
But what Paskevitch lacks in words she makes up for in actions. It was Paskevitch who came up with the idea of a dog park, spearheaded the fundraising efforts, and saw it through to fruition on Saturday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
“This was all McKenzie,” Patrone said. “She is the one who came to council with the initial idea and raised the money. This is her project. And we couldn’t be more proud of her. She did a great job and what you see here is because of McKenzie.”
The dog park, which sits on 2.5 acres off of Boardman Street, may have been McKenzie’s brainchild but it evolved into a community effort. Several major contributors stepped up to make Paskevitch’s dream come true and a sign at the dog park entrance recognizes those organizations, businesses, and individuals for doing just that. They are the Columbiana Community Foundation, New Waterford Village Council, Buckeye Country Kids 4-H Club, New Waterford Volunteer Fire Department, Alcatraz Body Modifications, New Waterford Street Department, Rogers Community Auction, ADL Property Management, the Village of New Waterford, Gene and Mary Paskevitch, Girl Scout Troop 80080, NDC Heating and Cooling, New Waterford Eagles, Gorant Chocolate, Dr. Joseph Scott, Paul’s Grille, the Lisbon Vet Clinic, Ill Will Brewing Company, and the Schorejs, Hawkins, McCuen and Buckley families.
