A South Carolina dog named Clyde was given a second chance at life thanks to the quick actions of a local veterinarian. Dr. Margaret Hunt from Travelers Rest Animal Hospital saved the German shepherd from choking on a large Kong Toy that had become lodged in his esophagus.

Dr. Hunt used a maneuver called the external extraction technique (XXT) to dislodge the toy. She laid Clyde on his back and massaged his throat until the toy was released. The triumphant moment was caught on camera and quickly went viral on social media.
The veterinarian credits the rescue to the collaborative effort of her clinic‘s team. She told Fox News Digital, “Every success at our clinic is the result of a group effort.” Dr. Hunt emphasized the importance of the front office staff, technicians, and other staff who keep appointments running smoothly.
Despite her heroism, Dr. Hunt does not consider herself a hero. She said, “I’m a veterinarian blessed to work at a fantastic clinic with highly trained and supportive coworkers.”
So, how can one perform the XXT? Paola Cuevas, a veterinary consultant at Hepper.com, an online pet products store, explained that XXT is a safe and effective intervention for dogs with full airway obstruction due to round objects like balls or Kong toys.
To perform the technique, place the dog on its back with the neck area and airway straight and parallel to the floor. Depending on the dog’s size, you might be able to straddle over it, but make sure not to put too much pressure. If needed, a second person can help hold the dog’s back limbs.
First, identify the trachea and the object inside it. Then, make a diamond shape with your hands and use your thumbs to push the ball down and up toward the mouth, as if you were drawing a “J” shape with both thumbs. The pressure should eject the object from the dog‘s mouth.
Cuevas noted that some dogs will recover right after this procedure, but others might need two rescue breaths or even cardiopulmonary resuscitation to fully recover. With quick thinking and the right technique, choking dogs can be saved from potentially life-threatening situations.
