1. Understanding the Importance of Healthy Pet Food Choices
As responsible pet owners, we understand the significance of providing our furry companions with the best care possible. One crucial aspect of their overall well-being is their nutrition. Just like humans, pets require a balanced and nutritious diet to maintain a healthy and thriving life. Unfortunately, many pet owners are still unaware of the significant impact that food choices can have on their pet’s overall health. This section aims to shed light on the importance of healthy pet food choices and the role they play in preserving our beloved animals’ quality of life.
First and foremost, selecting the right pet food is essential for ensuring a stronger immune system. A healthy immune system is fundamental to protecting pets against illnesses and diseases. Nutrient-rich pet diets, specifically tailored to their individual needs, help bolster their immune response, making them more resistant to infections and promoting faster recovery. The absence of essential nutrients can compromise the immune system, leaving pets prone to recurring illnesses and infections.
Furthermore, healthy food choices contribute to proper growth and development. Puppies and kittens, as well as juvenile animals, have specific nutritional requirements that must be met to support their rapid growth. Adequate amounts of proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals are essential during these stages to support bone development, muscle growth, and overall cognitive function. A lack of these vital nutrients can lead to stunted growth, weakened bones, and developmental delays, compromising their overall health and vitality.
In addition to growth and development, the significance of healthy pet food choices is also reflected in their energy levels and weight management. The right combination of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats provides the necessary fuel for pets to sustain their daily activities, ensuring they have an optimal energy level. Conversely, a poor diet lacking essential nutrients can result in lethargy and fatigue, inhibiting their ability to lead an active and fulfilling life.
Weight management is another crucial aspect influenced by the quality of pet food choices. Obesity among pets is a growing concern, with numerous health complications associated with being overweight. Just as with humans, a balanced diet, combined with appropriate portion control, is essential to maintaining a healthy weight. Providing our pets with nutritious and portion-controlled meals can help prevent obesity, reducing the risk of obesity-related health issues such as diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease.
Moreover, pets with allergies or sensitivities can greatly benefit from a carefully selected diet. Food allergies are a common problem among pets, and the symptoms can range from itchy skin to gastrointestinal issues. Pet food options that are specifically designed to address these allergies often contain limited ingredients, eliminating potential allergens and reducing the likelihood of adverse reactions. By identifying and avoiding trigger ingredients, pet owners can help alleviate their companion’s discomfort and provide relief from allergic symptoms.
Finally, healthy pet food choices can significantly impact the lifespan and overall longevity of our beloved companions. A balanced diet, rich in essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals, plays a crucial role in maintaining their overall health and well-being. By ensuring pets receive the nutrients their bodies require, we can help them live longer and happier lives, filled with energy and vitality.
In conclusion, the importance of healthy pet food choices cannot be overemphasized enough. From strengthening the immune system to supporting growth and development, promoting optimal energy levels, weight management, addressing allergies, and extending their lifespan, the impact of what we feed our pets is far-reaching. As pet owners, we have the power to enhance their quality of life through the decisions we make regarding their nutrition. So let us
2. Key Nutritional Needs for a Balanced Diet
2. Key Nutritional Needs for a Balanced Diet
A balanced diet plays a crucial role in maintaining the overall health and well-being of our furry companions. Just like humans, pets require essential nutrients to thrive and flourish. Providing them with the right nutrition is imperative to avoid the risk of nutrient deficiencies or excesses that could lead to various health problems. In this section, we will delve into the key nutritional needs that should be met for a well-rounded and optimal pet diet.
1. Protein:
Protein is a fundamental component of a pet’s diet, as it serves as the building block for healthy muscles, tissues, and organs. Pets require a higher protein intake compared to humans due to their higher metabolic rates. Animal-based proteins, such as chicken, beef, and fish, are highly recommended as they contain all the essential amino acids necessary for a pet’s well-being. Quality and digestibility are vital considerations when choosing protein sources for your pet to ensure they receive optimal nourishment.
2. Carbohydrates:
Carbohydrates provide a vital source of energy for pets. However, it is crucial to select complex carbohydrates over simple ones, as they offer more sustainable energy release over time. Whole grains, such as brown rice and oats, along with fibrous vegetables like sweet potatoes and peas, are excellent sources of complex carbohydrates for pets. Avoiding excessive amounts of carbohydrates is essential, especially for pets prone to weight gain or those with specific medical conditions, such as diabetes.
3. Fats:
While fats are often portrayed negatively, they are an essential part of a balanced pet diet. Fats serve as a concentrated source of energy, aid in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, and contribute to a healthy coat and skin. Including healthy sources of fat, such as salmon oil or flaxseed oil, can be beneficial for your pet’s overall well-being. However, it is essential to note that fat intake should be carefully regulated, as excessive amounts can lead to obesity and related health issues.
4. Vitamins and Minerals:
Vitamins and minerals play a pivotal role in supporting the immune system, ensuring proper growth and development, and maintaining overall health. While a well-balanced pet diet should provide a significant portion of these essential nutrients, certain vitamins and minerals may require supplementation depending on individual pet needs. Consulting with a veterinarian is crucial to determining any specific nutritional requirements your pet may have and addressing them adequately.
5. Hydration:
Just like humans, pets require an adequate intake of water to maintain proper hydration. Water is essential for various bodily functions, including digestion, nutrient absorption, circulation, and temperature regulation. Ensure that your pet always has access to fresh, clean water, especially during warmer months or after physical activity.
Remember, every pet is unique, and their dietary needs may vary depending on factors such as age, breed, weight, and existing health conditions. It is imperative to consult with a veterinarian to develop a diet plan tailored specifically to your furry companion’s needs. A professional veterinarian can guide portion sizes, feeding schedules, and any necessary dietary adjustments based on your pet’s overall health.
In conclusion, a balanced diet is key to maintaining the overall health and wellness of our pets. Providing them with the appropriate amounts of protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water ensures they receive the essential nutrients necessary for their specific needs. By paying close attention to their nutritional requirements and seeking professional guidance, we can ensure our furry companions live a healthy and fulfilling life.
3. Identifying Common Pet Food Ingredients to Avoid
In the world of pet nutrition, pet owners need to have a comprehensive understanding of the ingredients found in pet food. By identifying and avoiding certain common pet food ingredients, owners can ensure that their beloved companions are receiving the best possible nutrition for optimal health. In this section, we will explore three ingredients that should be avoided when selecting pet food.
First and foremost, it is crucial to avoid artificial preservatives such as BHA, BHT, and ethoxyquin. These chemicals are commonly used in pet food to extend shelf life and prevent spoilage. However, research has shown that they may have detrimental effects on the health of pets. BHA and BHT, for example, have been linked to potential cancer risks in animals. Ethoxyquin, originally developed as a pesticide, has also raised concerns due to its potential toxicity. As responsible pet owners, it is important to choose pet foods that utilize natural preservatives, such as vitamin E and rosemary extract, instead of artificial additives.
Secondly, pet owners should be cautious of chemical food dyes added to pet food. These dyes are often used to enhance the appearance, making the food more visually appealing to humans. However, many of these dyes have no nutritional value and can potentially cause allergic reactions or behavioral problems in pets. Some common artificial dyes to be aware of include Red 40, Yellow 5, and Blue 2. Opting for pet foods that are free from artificial dyes is a wise choice for maintaining optimal pet health.
Additionally, it is important to avoid ingredients such as by-products, corn, and wheat. By-products are non-meat animal parts, including organs, feet, and feathers. While they may be a more affordable option for pet food manufacturers, they are generally not as nutritionally beneficial as whole meat sources. Corn and wheat, on the other hand, are low-quality fillers commonly used in pet food. These ingredients offer limited nutritional value and are often linked to food sensitivities and allergies in pets. Instead, look for pet foods that feature whole protein sources, such as chicken or fish, as the primary ingredients.
It is worth mentioning that the absence of certain ingredients is just as important as avoiding those mentioned above. Some pet food labels proudly advertise that their products are free from artificial preservatives, dyes, by-products, corn, and wheat. These brands typically prioritize using high-quality ingredients and aim to provide optimal nutrition for pets. As discerning pet owners, it is crucial to read and understand pet food labels to make informed decisions about what we feed our companions.
In conclusion, educating ourselves about the ingredients used in pet food is essential for ensuring the health and well-being of our furry friends. By avoiding ingredients such as artificial preservatives, chemical dyes, by-products, corn, and wheat, we can select pet foods that provide the best possible nutrition. It is always a good practice to read and understand pet food labels to make informed decisions about our pet’s diet. By doing so, we can unleash a lifetime of health and happiness for our beloved companions.

5. Transitioning to a Healthy Pet Food Diet: Tips and Considerations
Transitioning to a Healthy Pet Food Diet: Tips and Considerations
When you decide to switch your pet to a healthier diet, it is crucial to approach the transition with care and consideration. Just like humans, pets need time to adapt to new foods, and changing their diet abruptly can lead to digestive issues and discomfort. To ensure a smooth transition to a healthy pet food diet, here are some important tips and considerations to keep in mind.
1. Gradual Transition:
To minimize the risk of gastrointestinal upset, it is recommended to introduce the new food gradually. Start by mixing a small amount of the new food with the existing food your pet is currently eating. Begin with a ratio of 75% old food to 25% new food. Over a week, gradually increase the proportion of the new food while decreasing the amount of the old food until you have completely transitioned your pet to the new diet. This slow transition allows your pet’s digestive system to adjust to the new ingredients and prevents any sudden dietary changes.
2. Monitor Your Pet’s Reaction:
During the transition period, closely observe your pet for any changes in behavior, appetite, or stool consistency. Some pets may experience mild digestive discomfort in the initial stages of switching their diet. However, if you notice severe vomiting, diarrhea, or any other worrisome symptoms, consult your veterinarian immediately. They can guide how to proceed and make any necessary adjustments to the transition process.
3. Patience and Persistence:
Switching to a new diet may be met with resistance, especially if your pet has become used to certain flavors or textures. It is essential to remain patient and persistent in encouraging your pet to try the new food. Offer small portions of the new food at regular intervals and gradually increase the serving size. Mixing in small amounts of treats or toppers can also help to entice your pet and make the transition more appealing. Remember that it may take some time for your pet to fully accept the new diet, so don’t give up too soon.
4. Customization for Individual Needs:
Pets, just like people, have unique nutritional requirements based on their age, breed, size, and health condition. When transitioning to a healthy pet food diet, consider these individual needs and choose a food that caters specifically to them. Puppies and kittens, for example, require different nutrient ratios than adult pets, while senior pets may benefit from foods with joint support or lower calorie content. If your pet has any specific dietary restrictions or sensitivities, consult with your veterinarian to ensure you select a suitable food that meets their unique requirements.
5. Consultation with a Veterinarian:
Before making any major changes to your pet’s diet, it is always recommended to consult with a veterinarian. They can provide valuable guidance and expertise to ensure a successful transition. A veterinarian will assess your pet’s current health condition and help you choose the most appropriate food for their specific needs. They can also offer advice on portion control, feeding schedules, and introducing additional supplements if necessary.
In conclusion, transitioning your pet to a healthier food diet requires careful planning and consideration. By taking a gradual approach, monitoring their reaction, and seeking guidance from a veterinarian, you can ensure a successful transition that promotes your companion’s overall health and well-being. Remember, a healthy diet is the foundation for a long and happy life for your beloved furry friend.
In conclusion, choosing the right pet food is essential for maintaining the health and well-being of our furry companions. By understanding their nutritional needs and selecting high-quality ingredients, we can ensure that they receive the proper nourishment they deserve. It is crucial to prioritize their specific dietary requirements and avoid cheap and low-quality options that may be detrimental to their overall health. Investing in a well-balanced and nutritious diet will not only enhance their physical health but also contribute to their longevity and happiness. As responsible pet owners, let us embrace the importance of unleashing pet nutrition and make informed decisions to provide our companions with the best food choices available.
What did dogs and cats eat before 'pet food' and that multi billion dollar ( what I'm seeing as a ) scam now as the 'Pet Food Industry' ? They ate what we ate !!! And, in the case of cats, whatever they could catch in the garden, or fields, where they lived.
I've decided that my dog will now mostly eat what I eat ( less any toppings like gravy, sauces, etc.) So – fresh, lean meat like beef, chicken, pork, some fish, eggs, and some vegetables – that are good for dogs – thrown in for good measure. I won't have to worry about what my dog is 'really eating', anymore, and how it may be effecting his health in a bad way. Healthy, home cooked meals where you know just what's in it : It's worked for me, and kept me healthy my whole life – it'll work for my fur baby, too. 🙂
Thank you! 👍🏼
I have given my dog ever since she was 12 weeks old, home cooked meals. Either, beef, pork, lamb, chicken or venison mixed with lentils, kidney beans, chick peas, oatmeal, kale, brocali, cauliflower. Sometimes I give her an egg mixed in or a tin of sardines. I make 3 weeks worth of dinners and freeze them into portions for each day. I have her nearly 2 years now and she is very healthy. It's actually no big fuss to make. It takes a half hour to do it. It's cheaper than a medium quality kibble and I get a lot of satisfaction knowing she is getting the best food I can give her. She is a cockapoo. I'm keen to see if she lives longer than the average cockapoo.
Great video! We feed our sausage dog chicken, sweet potatoes, carrot, green beans sometimes add in heart, kidney, livers then steak mince. He also has eggs occasionally, and oily fish which is relatively cheap. We cook in bulk then use throughout the week, even save our eggshells, grind them down and mix small amount into meals for the calcium. All I can say is we know what he's eating, and there's always a clean bowl afterwards! 🐶
so dowe have to fee our dogs the kibbles and wet canned food or can i just feed her our food, and dog friendly veggies and fruits with the once a week raw
Truthfully these are not just veterinary secrets. Much of it can be applied to humans.
My dogs belly and legs are swollen bad after stopping heart condition medication cause medicine was killing him what can i do for the swelling please thanks
My dog refuses to eat raw food. She smells it, gives it a lick, and walks away. She would rather eat warm, cooked meat than anything else.
Please do a video on dogs with sruvite stones and their home food
I have almost the same recipe. I start with a ground beef base then add: lentils, green powder, pumpkin, ground flax or chia seeds, psyllium powder dusting as a binder, and sunflower seeds. The ground beef is microwaved with the other ingredients into a meat sauce texture. I also include a mixture of uncooked carrots, tomato, broccoli, and strawberries blended to a sauce with bone broth. I change the ingredients occasionally.
When I feed them I add a bit of V-dog or Wild Earth vegan kibble and mix it all together. The kibble provides a healthy crunch they like and may catch some nutrients I may have missed.
Most of my dogs have lived to 18 years. They pass from old age. They get a noon meal and a couple of treats in the evening for teeth cleaning. I have never and would never feed them the poison in the store dog food aisle.
The "meat" in these commercial foods are denatured and / or rancid from processing to "sanitize" for consumption. Even the ones from the store cooler. It's what you start with that matters. If the ingredients list has more than two or three items, walk away.
Ask yourself. How can a unrefrigerated bag of dog food sit on a warm store shelf for six months and claim the number one ingredient is meat? Think preservatives.
Thank you Dr. Jones! I have had this question on my brain for awhile! I have a beautiful and sweet Old Time Scotch Collie, Australian Shepherd and precious lap pup – I now feel more confident about the direction I want to take their diet. 🌻
I decided to stop giving dry Kibble to my fur baby and started buying The Farmers Dog Food which is human grade food…. I wanted to cut expenses and after five months or so found out they have a “DIY” program whereby you buy their Nutrient Mix Supplement and they give you many recipes to follow…….it was so helpful and easy to prepare, I can’t rave enough about it!!!!!! It’s costing me half of what I was paying every month and I’m willing to take the time to make a batch which at 304 calories/day lasts 8-days….so if I make 4 batches and freeze, I have enough for the whole month….I just got done making the Chicken and Broccoli and the Turkey and Vegetable Recipe…I’ll do the beef one next….then maybe another Turkey……..she’s 20lbs and a Chi/Pin….I feed her twice a day…..she absolutely loves it!!!!! I just want to keep her as healthy as possible…I too was giving her Acana which is a better grade of kibble but is still highly processed and has an extremely long shelf life……that’s my story…God bless everyone 🥰 and ty Dr for all your natural remedies……I made your shampoo with the Green Tea and Castile Soap and Lavender Oil…..
Im so confused. My dog has MCT, and the other day, she was at the vet, and I told the vet that I changed her diet to 95% raw and a small amount of kibble 1/2 cup. She said to check the kiddle for potatoes and legumes. She said they weren't good for my dog to eat. The kibble has sweet potatoes and peas.
My new puppy isn’t eating his food, I’m stress out
I have had cats for over 50 years now and in the beginning we only had Whiskas and leftovers the cats lived healthy and long. Then I wanted what I thought was healthy for them and changed to Science Diet 23 yrs ago and they slowly starting dying of different cancers between 10 and 15 yrs, my precious baby had 2 operations to remove her breats in two operations and still I lost her at 14. I eventually put it down to the food and changed to a completely grain free diet and they are living past 20 yrs. To me that says a lot.
The down side is I have to live at least another 25 years as my youngest is nearly 2 and I'm 67 now. 🤣😹
Great video, great information !!! Definitely believe there's a commercial food/ cancer connection. Thanks Doc !!❤
Small dogs always have denra issues.
I love your videos. I also feed my dog about 1/4 – 1/3 kibble, but she gets ground meats, green veggies, pumpkins, occasional olive oil supplement, eggs, oatmeal, calcium supplement from eggshells you had a video on. She is strong, has clear eyes, shiny coat and is happy and calm 😊
ONCE I ASKED MY VET WHICH FLEA MED HE RECOMMEND FOR MY DOG'S * HE SIMPLY EXPLAINED WHAT HIS OFFICE HAD AVAILABLE *
THEN I ASKED HIM WHAT HE USED FOR HIS DOG'S *
AFTER GOING AROUND THE BLOCK TO TELL ME WHAT HE COULD HAVE IN THE DRIVEWAY *
HE TOLD US THAT HE WASN'T ABLE TO ANSWER THAT QUESTION OUT RIGHT * CONFLICT OF INTEREST I GUESS *
can i make white rice, chicken, pumpkin, green beans? heat it?
Thank you so much! It's time to become aware of what we are feeding our beloved fur friends! ❤
Acana is at the top for DCM in dogs and peas /legumes are linked to DCM/Heart Disease in dogs.
I thought peas were a possible cause of DCM?
Hi Dr Jones. I go to a pet food store they say they research everything they buy. They have a new kibble and a canned topper out now called Canine Cavier. Have you heard about this dog food and what do you think about it?
I would disagree with the statement that "different dogs have different dietary requirements".
They don't. There is no such thing as a species of animal where one member of that species has different dietary requirements than another member of that species. All dogs should be eating a proper canine diet. No dog needs any grains, vegetables, or fruit, in their diet. The only things any dog needs to eat is meat, fat, bones, and organs. That's it. Anything else is only causing harm, even if only a little over a long period of time. Just because your dog seems to be doing well with carrots mixed on with its food doesn't mean the carrots are doing anything good.
This is where I lose faith in my vet. She pretty much bullied me into feeding grain-inclusive and my dog has been having reoccurring eye infections every since.
Will someone please tell me what breed sweet Tula is? Many thanks!
I started feeding my chocolate lab a sardine and a teaspoon of sunflower seed oil with her kibble. She had bare patches and itching for years before this, and this simple addition to her diet has made such a positive difference. Much less itching and paw biting, and her coat is on its way to being thick and shiny — in only a few weeks. I think eventually I'll have her off the apoquel. Thank you so much for your advice.
Just looked up the Clean Label Project and they didn't list any dog food information…
Thank you very much, but what can i feed a siamese cat with a sensitive stomach.
Thanks a lot for this video. Being very confused as to what to feed, I’ve decided on a cooked meal every evening—starting with your recipe, cooked ahead of time. That’s very doable. I can’t bring myself to feed raw yet, though. (Didn’t dogs die younger when they lived in the wild—though it may not have been the food.)
Thank you doctor so much! The pet food industry has worked hard to scare the hell out of people who might consider feeding their own dogs. The truth is, no one knows what a complete and balanced diet is for dogs! We can't even nail down what humans should eat. These companies do not have a lock on the truth. The truth is that NO pet owner with an ounce of sense and a gram of diligence could possibly feed their dogs worse than commercially made "food". Yes, it is that bad! there are many great resources for homemade meals, including this channel. Just do it!
DO YOU HAVE A DOG FOOD OR RECOMMEND ONE???
THANK YOU DR. JONES
I worked in a very nice meat dept. They added tumors. Cancerous tissue to the ground bf. 🤐🤐
Any suggestions on cat food for diabetic. The Purina dm kibble is so expensive. Was at the vet yesterday and her glucose was low 3.3 so he lowered her insulin to 2 from 2.5,says she may be going into remission. I go back in a week. Thanks
Can a dog be vegetarian? If so, what can replace what they get out of meat or chicken?
I thought green peas aren't good for their kidneys, so I use green beans. What do you think? Also, can I feed them lentils? Thank you
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the honest truths, advice, and information!!
I have a American bully with allergy bumps, they told me not to give her turkeys ,
lol Always wondered why there was never Mouse/Rat/Finch cat foods or Chipmunk/Rabbit/Weasel dog foods.
I add in chicken hearts, chick or beef liver, & egg to homemades…Kale, rice, bone broth smoothies as "gravy". Yep, sometimes it's a "Not today" day, and kibbles come in handy. (Funny how they prefer the 'not so good for you' ones to the actually nutritious ones…kinda like Us, yes?) 🙂 Thank you, Doc, for all you share…You're the best! <3
The truth is dogs are gross. In the wild, they scavenge and eat carcasses, road kill, trash and poop. Puppies eat poop to build gut flora. They roll in poop and dead things to hide their smell from other animals. Because they arent exposed to the right bacteria from said disgusting things they are developing allergies. Same as people, everything is sterile and clean now so kids aren't developing immunity hence, allergies.
I remember getting upset at my parents for feeding our family dog with our leftovers + other homemade stuff for her, instead of kibble. I was a kid back then and though kibble was supposed to be way better for dogs..
Now as an adult and with all the information available I realize how how wrong I was 🤡🫠
People are always going on about not feeding dogs human food ??? What is human food ? They should be saying a lot of food humans eat is not good for dogs (nor humans) i cook all my dogs food for him , he's very fussy and won't eat the commercial dog food ,i did a lot of research which isn't easy not really any solid information on the Internet,i do continue to research but i think its a good balanced diet he's getting and he loves it , i cook four meals at a time so i don't freeze any and do a variety of mixes and feed fish once a week
This makes sense a food that’s balanced. I never understood why a dog should be forced to eat the same thing say after day. Humans don’t why should they? I’m so glad to have these videos to watch and confirm how important it is to feed a Furbaby moderation with kibble, raw, and other healthy foods for them
You are CORRECT and our dogs NEVER had any problems as cancers
My grandma fed her dogs fresh fish berry's peas an egg strait from chickens and brown rice all her dogs happy healthy lived 4 years more then average life span
I was always told not to feed dogs turkey .
👍 😘 🙏 🙏 ❤❤❤❤
Thanks for sharing. I read many of your blog posts, cool, your blog is very good.
