Coco is in a bit of a quandary.
The inquisitive and affectionate five-year-old dog has spent more than a year at the Niagara SPCA and Humane Society and staff can’t understand why she hasn’t yet been adopted.
“She’s so sweet, so loyal, a lovely girl … and we haven’t had anyone really show any interest in her,” said Tammy Gaboury, animal care manager at the Niagara Falls shelter.
The dog’s high energy personality may be a bit of a stumbling block to potential adoptees, but Gaboury said Coco is eager to learn and would be an ideal addition to an active family.
“She does have a lot of beans in her,” she said. “She’ll be you best hiking partner – she can walk and walk and go for more.”
The black and white mixed breed with the large pointy ears would also be ideal canine agility athlete.
Niagara resident Deanna Warner came across Coco’s bio on the humane society website.
She later learned the pup has been waiting for a forever home for more than 400 days.
“No animal should have to wait a year or more to find a forever home,” she said.
Warner posted a photograph of Coco on her Facebook page earlier this month in an attempt to find her a home.
To date, her post has been shared than 1,700 times.
Warner is a volunteer with Critter Cabs Animal Rescue Transport which uses a network of ‘freedom drivers’ to transport animals in need to rescue organizations and foster homes in Ontario or Quebec.
“I advocate for dogs when I see they need help because we are their voices to help them,” she said.
“When I see a dog that is so deserving to have a good life I want to help.”
Coco is listed as a terrier-mix, yet her true lineage is a mystery.
“We’re not really sure,” Gaboury said with a laugh.
“Sometimes we see some whippet or greyhound when she’s racing around the play yard, sometimes we see a lab-mix and there’s maybe some border collie in there too.”
Coco was among a number of dogs transferred to Niagara last year from a shelter in Florida which was at capacity.
